A
Absences- If your child is sick or unable to attend school, please call 810-299-3954 to let us know. If you know in advance your child will not be to school, please send me a note.
Alternative Destination- Does your child go to an alternative destination after school? If so, please fill out an alternative destination form.
Art- Your child will have art every third day. Our art teacher is Mr. Walker. Art education will take place in the art studio.
Assessment- Throughout the year I will be assessing your children by looking at their work samples and doing observations.
Arrival- School starts at 9:05 a.m.
B
Backpacks- Please check them daily.
Birthdays- We will celebrate birthdays with a class story and a song.We do not pass out birthday invitations at school unless everyone is invited. Brighton Area Schools follows a strict no birthday treat policy.
Book Orders- Several times during the year book orders will be sent home. Please know that participation in this is purely optional. Because the books are so reasonable I feel it is worth offering them to those families who wish to participate. This year we will only be able to order online. Due to supply chain issues Scholastic Book Orders are delayed. They currently have a 4-6 week backorder. You can choose to have your books sent directly to your home. https://orders.scholastic.com/HPQWF
Breakfast- Please make sure that your child is eating a healthy breakfast before school. Students are able to enjoy breakfast at school each morning. There is no cost for breakfast.

Communication- Communication is key. Feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns.
Conferences- We will be having one formal conferences in the fall. This will more than likely be in October or November. It is very important you set up a time to hear about your child’s progress in school. Conferences are scheduled in the fall prior to the first report card. All parents are expected to attend. The dates for the conferences will be announced in upcoming newsletters. These conferences will more than likely be offered in both in-person and virtual format and are planned to discuss your child’s progress and offer ideas on how to help your child succeed.

Designers- This year your child will be a designer.
Dismissal- Dismissal is at 3:57 P.M. Please remember to call or send a note if your child will be going home a different way.
Dress Code- Please refer to the handbook for information pertaining to dress code.

EPIC- We will use EPIC to read books virtually.
Everyday Math- Brighton Area Schools has adopted Everyday Math as our mathematics program.

Family Support- This year your child will need your support as a family to help them navigate virtual learning. It is very important that you are available to help provide guidance and answer questions.
Field Trips- This year we will be experiencing a few field trips.
Fire Drills- Your child will participate in frequent fire drills throughout the year. We will practice the procedures before our first fire drill so that your child will be prepared.
Flexibility- As we enter the new school year it is important to have flexibility. One of the first mantras I teach my kindergarteners is that "We are Flexible. Plans change and that's okay."
Food Allergies- I am a food allergy advocate. Please let me know if your child has any food allergies or specific dietary needs.
Fundraisers- PTO sponsors several fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for various things for our school. We hope everyone can participate, but it is not required. If you would like to make a donation you can do so on the PTO website. https://hiltonpto.weebly.com/

Guidance- Our school social worker, Riley Goble, may provide classroom guidance throughout the year.
Grace- Please help us as we transition through this school year with grace. If your child hears you at home expressing an optimistic attitude they will do the same.

Homework- You will have "family homework" this year. Your child will have activities to do together with you as a family.
I
Illness- Please do not send your child to school if he/she has a temperature. If your child becomes ill at school, you will be called to come and get your child. Your child needs to be fever free for 24 hours before they can return to school. A fever is 100.4 or above.

Jump Rope Club is something your child may have the opportunity to participate in this year.
K
Kindergarteners are kind and safe and helpful. This is our kindergarten motto. This is something we are working on EVERYDAY.
L
Library- We will hopefully check out books from the library this year. Please make sure your child returns her/his book on this day. No other books can be checked out until an overdue book is returned. Our Media Specialist and Librarian are Mrs. Lauer and Mrs. Latimer. They are always looking for volunteers to help in the library!
Lost and Found - We have a Lost and Found located in the front hallway near the gym/ cafeteria. It is a great idea to label EVERYTHING.
Lunch- The cost for hot lunch this year is free. If your child chooses to get seconds the cost is $3.00. Your child will be given a student ID number. This is also the number they will use to purchase meals. You can pay by cash, check, or credit card. Checks are made payable to BAS Cafe. You can check your child’s account balance online through ParentConnect. Payments can be made online in ParentConnect through PayPal. You can also make a credit card payment over the phone by calling 810-299-4175. Our lunchtime is at 11:15. We will not have a microwave available to reheat food.
M
Medications- The office staff will administer all medications. Please let me know if your child is to be given any medicine during school hours. If your child has asthma, you may want to consider leaving a spare inhaler in the office. Do not send medicine to school in your child’s backpack. This includes cough drops or sore throat lollipops.
Milk- The cost to purchase milk with lunch is $.75. There are several milk varieties to choose from which includes: white, chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. Due to supply chain issues this could change.
Mindfulness- We will have some time each day to calm our bodies and our minds. We will practice breathing strategies and stretches.
Money- Money brought to school for any reason should always be in an envelope with your child’s name and my name or Mouse Room #9.
Music- Your child will attend music class each week. Our music teacher is Mrs. Delekta.

Newsletter- You will be receiving a weekly newsletter. They will inform you on what we are learning about, ways to help at home, upcoming events, and more. These will be hardcopy and usually come home on Fridays.
Notes- If you have a note for me or the office, please send an email.
Nurse- Mrs. Cadie Godfrey is our school nurse.
O
Outdoor Classroom-We will travel to the Wetlands and use the outdoor classroom.
Outside- Your child will have outside time daily, weather permitting. Please dress your child appropriately for the weather.
P
Parent Involvement- We love Parent Involvement! I will send home a letter about ways you can help at home or when the time is right in the classroom.
Phenomenal Science- We have a great science program called Phenomenal Science.
Physical Education- We have gym class every week. Please make sure your child wears tennis shoes on gym day. Our physical education teacher is Mr. Griest.
P.R.I.D.E- You will learn about what P.R.I.D.E stands for at Hilton.
Principal- Mrs. Belanger is our principal. She will visit our classroom often. Your child will get to know her right away!
PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization)- All parents are encouraged to join the school’s PTO.
Q
Questions- Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s education.
Quietly- This is how we transition to and from activities. Please model with your child how to move quietly in the hallways as you bring them in and out of the building.
R
Reading- Plan to spend at least twenty minutes each night reading with your child.
Reading Workshop- We use Units of Study reading program. We will have Reading Workshop daily.

Report Cards- Kindergarten report cards come home three times a year. You will receive one in December, March, and June.
Restrooms- We have restroom in our classroom and your child is allowed to go when needed. Unfortunately, accidents will happen and we will make sure that your child is sent to the nurse’s office for a change of clothes if they do not have a spare in their backpack.
R.T.I- Your child might participate in Response to Intervention. This is a program designed to help support students so they are at the core level of learning.
Rules- In our classroom we have three basic rules. Be Kind! Be Safe! Be Helpful!
S
Safety- Your child’s safety is top priority. I take every precaution when your child is in my care. It is my number one job to keep them safe and their job to help keep it that way. Thank you for helping us be a safe school.
Snacks- Our classroom is a peanut, tree nut, peanut butter free room. Please read the labels on all foods and snacks you send to school. If it contains nuts or may contain nuts it will not be served in our classroom. Check those labels!
Schedule- A sample class schedule will be provided soon.
Secretaries- Our school secretaries are Mrs. Nancy Campeau and Mrs. Kristie Hopka.
Shoes- Please have your child wear tennis shoes each day. Now is the time to begin working with your child to learn how to tie his/her shoes. If your child in not yet able to tie velcro is always a good option.
Sight Words- Your child will learn some basic sight words this year. I will include them in our weekly classroom newsletter.
S'More- This is an online newsletter. Mr. Rudolph uses it to post updates in his Hound Dog Huddle. I will use it to send home class newsletters as well.
S.T.E.A.M- Mrs. Lewicki is our S.T.E.A.M. teacher this year. Your child will have S.T.E.A.M every fourth day.
T
Transportation- If your child will be going home a different way than normal, you MUST call the school or send me a note. I will not let your child go with another adult or a different way unless you have notified me.
Tardies- Students late to school (after 9:15 A.M.) are considered tardy.
Toys- Toys from home are not allowed. This includes backpack keychains! Please do not send ANY toys!
U
Unique- We are all unique. Teachers and students all teach and learn in different ways.
V
Volume- We are working to use inside voices. We need to remember to use whisper voices and quiet voices too.
Volunteers- We always need volunteers. You can help in our classroom or help at home. The art teacher and the librarian love to have help! Here is the link to fill out an online background check for volunteers.
W
W.I.N. Time- Your child will participate in What I Need time. This is a rotational based literacy component where children work with different kindergarten teachers to meet their specific literacy needs.
Word Study- We have word study centers four days a week. These help to support phonics, phonemic awareness,
Writing- We use Units of Study Writing Program. Your child will have Writing Workshop daily.
X
eXplore- Explore a metropark, Mackinac Island, the Detroit Zoo, the Imagination Station, and other Michigan attractions.
Y
Yearbook- You will have a chance to buy a yearbook now or at the end of the year.
Z
ZZZZ’s- Your child should get plenty of rest each night. Kindergarten students require 10-12 hours of sleep a day. It is so important for your child to be alert and ready to learn each day. Set a bedtime and be consistent.
